DATES SET FOR 8TH ANNUAL ISLAND CUP FISHING CONTEST
Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters’ Association announces June 19, 20 and 21st as the upcoming 8th Island Cup contest on Nantucket, hosted by the defending champion Nantucket Angler’s Club.
According to MV Team Captain Victor Colantonio, “The contest combines a surf-fishing competition with a neighborly home-hosted stay. The result is a big dose of fun while fish are biting and a bigger dose of friendship when they’re not. The Island Cup is another way to stir up membership in our organization by offering a new venue, new friendships and the great experience of team fishing.”
Colantonio said, “It’s America’s only Team Surfcasting Competition open to men and women. This year, our MV team has a critical shortage of women - so please gals, dust off the waders and come to Nantucket to fish with Nantucket’s‘Happy Hookers’’!
The excursion begins on Friday, June 19 on HyLine departing Oak Bluffsat1:25pm. “Lines In” will be called 5:00pm Friday and “Lines Out” noon Sunday. Following a parade through the streets of Nantucket, the Cup will be awarded in the Anglers’ Club ballroom 2:00pmSunday. We’re back to the Vineyard by return ferry Sunday, June 21at4:00pm ($72 round trip) with the Cup in hand.
The contest is catch-and-release using only artificial bait (lures&flies). As for scoring, each angler’s heaviest bluefish and heaviest bass (28" min.) landed and weight-verified by an opposing angler counts toward the team total, heaviest total wins the Cup.
Anglers budget $200 for the weekend that includes the HyLine, a $20 Fish Kitty and$100for 5 meals. Each angler is responsible for the cost of personal items. Lodging, transportation and local knowledge guiding to the best Nantucket fishing spots are provided by the host team.
