The first MVSA meeting of 2012 took place at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown on Saturday, January 28th. Over 80 members were in attendance for this awesome event. It was a great gathering to renew friendships and share fishing stories from 2011. The banquet food was excellent as usual. Will Geresy (MVSA President) provided an update on the club, past successes and a beach erosion update. Chris Kennedy (The Trustees’ Martha’s Vineyard superintendent) provided an update on the Norton Point Breach and current conditions at Wasque. After the meeting was complete an awesome raffle of gifts donated by sponsors and members was held with all proceeds for the MVSA.

The Norton Point Beach breach may close as early as this year, an event that would bring to an end a dramatic, five-year phenomenon that has eaten away large chunks of the southeastern corner of Chappaquiddick, according to a top regional expert in coastal erosion.

The Norton Point Breach is continuing to close at an amazing rate. Ron Domurat reported the following:

"This is all that is left to the breach itself-about the width of the Gut! This was taken at dead low tide."

Only mother nature knows what is in store next for the breach. One can visualize that some day it may be possible to drive from Norton Point over to Chappy once again. Everyone has different opinions on if this would be a good thing or a bad thing but it does get the mind wandering. Time will tell....

Well, Friday the 13th proved very unlucky for the Wasque waterfront area. During the weekend of January 13, 2012, there was yet another bad storm that brought over 50+ MPH winds and destructive surf.  The entire Wasque lookout area, lookout platform and stairs are now being eroded into the beach and ocean below. It will not be long before mother nature will consume this area and drag it into the Atlantic. It is overwhelming and sad to see what is happening to this historic area that has held a special place in every Chappy fishermen's heart.

Thanks to Bob Clay for these photos.

Wasque continues to erode into the Atlantic courtesy of Mother Nature. These were taken four hours into the falling tide. As you can see by the photos, the surf is right down below the landing at the top of the stairs from the Fishermen's parking lot. At high tide, it is up against the base of the stairs. Erosion along the bluffs to the west is so bad the Trustees have closed the trail that led to the center parking lot.
