March 2016 Beach Update from The Trustees

Chris Kennedy

Many of you have probably heard about the disagreement between the County Commissioners and the Trustees over renewal of a long term agreement for the management of Norton Point Beach by TTOR.  We are hopeful this issue can get resolved in the next few weeks.  Our current agreement with the County expires on 3/31 but we intend to continue to manage the beach as long as it appears we are making some progress with the County to resolve our differences.  We have an incredible staff that work at all of the beaches and who put the resource and public access high on their list.  Continued...

The movie The Finest Hour is being screened at the MV Film Society Jan 29-31.  It depicts the heroic rescue of the crew of a stricken oil tanker in 1952 by a Coast Guard Crew from Chatham.  The Jan 31st,  4:00 PM screening is being sponsored by several island organizations, including the MV Derby.  Members of the Coast Guard, both past and present will be on hand for that screening, and will discuss the movie/take questions from the audience.  Nelson sent me a note about the sponsored event, to let the club know that tickets will sell out fast.  Please see the MV Times writeup in today’s paper

and the MV Film Society web site to purchase tickets

The derby Gods have spoken and the Norton Pont Breach is now wide open again. It opened sometime on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 30th. The breach is now about 50 feet wide and a large amount of current passing through it. If you are fishing there during the derby please be extremely careful as the sand is very soft and somewhat like quicksand within 10 feet of the water's edge. No fish is worth risking your life.

Check out the photo link below to see what  it looked like today, 9/30.

Mother nature has spoken and the derby now has a new twist!

Fish on and be safe!

A couple of updates from the club:

· Today the MV Surfcasters made a $1000 donation to the 7’th annual American Heroes Saltwater Challenge.  We’ve been supporting this event financially and with a large volunteer team at the East Beach outing for the soldiers and families.  The event takes place Oct 12-15 this year.  More details to follow re: the East Beach outing.

· Would encourage the club members to consider making a personal donation as well.  Please refer to the following link:

·  The Surfcasters and Larry’s Tackle got together and purchased a pier fish landing net for the new OB fish pier.  The net will be set up at the pier tomorrow and removed at the end of the Derby

· There was a typo in the recently distributed email version of the Aug newsletter, incorrectly listing the min striped bass weigh-in as 34”, it’s 32”. (The MVSA Newsletter in the BLOG section of the MVSA website has been corrected)

·  There are still several fillet shifts open during the Derby as follows: PM shifts - 9/15, 17, 22, 24, 29, and 10/1 & 8 (8:00-10:00PM) as well as AM shifts on 10/8, 9, 10, & 15 (8:00-10:00AM).  It’s a great opportunity to represent both the Surfcasters & the Derby.  If interested please contact Phil Horton or you can reply through the CONTACT US page on the MVSA website and Phil will be notifiedu.

The grand prize Eastern boat arrived on island this AM.  Pictures can be found on the Derby FB page.  It’s a beauty.

Wishing you all an enjoyable and safe Derby, go catch ‘em Surfcasters.
