FIRST ANNUAL "THE JABBERWOCKY"
FISHING TOURNAMENT
When: Friday, June 26, 2015
Where: Hyannis Anglers Club, 235 Ocean Street, Hyannis, MA 02601
Why: To Raise Funds for Camp Jabberwocky
Hosted By Charlie and Karen Gadbois, parents of a camper at Jabberwocky
About Camp Jabberwocky
Camp Jabberwocky is the oldest sleep away camp for people with disabilities in America. It was founded in the summer of 1953 by Helen "Hellcat" Lamb and her first volunteer Ursula. They brought a group of five children with Cerebral Palsy to their campground cottage in Oak Bluffs. The campers paid $15 a week if they could afford it and nothing if they couldn't and everyone had the time of their lives!
For the last 63 years, Camp Jabberwocky has been going strong with Hellcat's mission to provide campers with a week of adventure, friendship, and a break from the routine of their day-to-day.
It costs about $1450 a week for each camper to attend Camp Jabberwocky. Campers pay what they can afford, and no one is ever turned away because of their inability to pay.
The camp is completely run by volunteers. The session Directors, counselors, program staff and doctors are all volunteers...every single one of them! Our volunteers keep coming back year to year because of the connection they make with our campers, last season only 14 out of 150 volunteers were new to Camp Jabberwocky.
Camp Jabberwocky is one of the few places where age doesnt matter for people with disabilities and their families. Our campers have been coming since they were kids and the camp has no age limit. One of the original five campers still attends camp today. It was his 62nd summer last year. More info about Camp Jabberwocky HERE
A message from Our Hosts
"Our daughter Marie has been a camper at Camp Jabberwocky for the last several years and has loved every minute she has spent there! We hope you will consider getting involved and donating to The Jabberwocky. There is nothing better than being on the water on a Cape Cod summer day while helping to raise money for such a worthy cause!"
