I would like to thank Ron Domurat once again for putting together the Past and Present Member Derby Accomplishments for the MV Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. Everyone loves to see and share in the success of our MVSA members in the derby and this award list would not be possible without Ron's effort. Great job!
Other topics included are the December MVSA Meeting, MVSA In-House Derby, Contests, Tackle Sale, Offshore Trawler Update, Awards Banquet, Calendar events, etc...

The derby Gods have spoken and the Norton Pont Breach is now wide open again. It opened sometime on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 30th. The breach is now about 50 feet wide and a large amount of current passing through it. If you are fishing there during the derby please be extremely careful as the sand is very soft and somewhat like quicksand within 10 feet of the water's edge. No fish is worth risking your life.
Check out the photo link below to see what it looked like today, 9/30.
Mother nature has spoken and the derby now has a new twist!
Fish on and be safe!

Folks
A couple of updates from the club:
· Today the MV Surfcasters made a $1000 donation to the 7’th annual American Heroes Saltwater Challenge. We’ve been supporting this event financially and with a large volunteer team at the East Beach outing for the soldiers and families. The event takes place Oct 12-15 this year. More details to follow re: the East Beach outing.
· Would encourage the club members to consider making a personal donation as well. Please refer to the following link:
http://www.saltwaterchallenge.org/
· The Surfcasters and Larry’s Tackle got together and purchased a pier fish landing net for the new OB fish pier. The net will be set up at the pier tomorrow and removed at the end of the Derby
· There was a typo in the recently distributed email version of the Aug newsletter, incorrectly listing the min striped bass weigh-in as 34”, it’s 32”. (The MVSA Newsletter in the BLOG section of the MVSA website has been corrected)
· There are still several fillet shifts open during the Derby as follows: PM shifts - 9/15, 17, 22, 24, 29, and 10/1 & 8 (8:00-10:00PM) as well as AM shifts on 10/8, 9, 10, & 15 (8:00-10:00AM). It’s a great opportunity to represent both the Surfcasters & the Derby. If interested please contact Phil Horton or you can reply through the CONTACT US page on the MVSA website and Phil will be notifiedu.
The grand prize Eastern boat arrived on island this AM. Pictures can be found on the Derby FB page. It’s a beauty.
Wishing you all an enjoyable and safe Derby, go catch ‘em Surfcasters.
Phil

The MVSA once again designed a fishing exhibit for the 2015 Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair. There was a lot of hard work put into this great exhibit to highlight the history of fishing and the importance of it to all ages.
This exhibit won a blue ribbon for the Best Fishing Exhibit at the AG Fair!
Thanks to all those involved in putting this together and helping to spread the importance of fishing and the long term support that the MVSA club has to this sport.
Great job by all involved!

Trustees of Reservations
July 6, 2015
We have some good news for beach-goers and fishermen! As of this morning, The Trustees have reopened OSV access to most of Leland Beach, Wasque Point and the eastern half of Norton Point Beach. The plover chicks have successfully fledged in this area!
Access around the outside beach on the southern end of Leland Beach is still closed due to severe erosion of the trail, but vehicles can access Wasque Point via the inside Leland Beach trails. As well, the OSV trail from the Cedars to Arruda Point is reopened.
NOTE: There is still no through traffic allowed between Katama and Chappy via Norton Point Beach due to the presence of plover chicks in the middle of the beach.
The Cape Pogue Gut is still closed to OSV's due to the presence of unfledged plover and tern chicks. We also caution drivers to use care when driving from Wasque onto the eastern end of Norton Point from the Chappy side. Extreme high tides are causing some overwashing in the area. Don't park on the narrow travel corridor--you may find your vehicle surrounded by water at high tide!
Thanks for your support and understanding during the recent shorebird closures!
