Trustees of Reservations
July 6, 2015

We have some good news for beach-goers and fishermen! As of this morning, The Trustees have reopened OSV access to most of Leland Beach, Wasque Point and the eastern half of Norton Point Beach. The plover chicks have successfully fledged in this area!

Access around the outside beach on the southern end of Leland Beach is still closed due to severe erosion of the trail, but vehicles can access Wasque Point via the inside Leland Beach trails. As well, the OSV trail from the Cedars to Arruda Point is reopened.

NOTE: There is still no through traffic allowed between Katama and Chappy via Norton Point Beach due to the presence of plover chicks in the middle of the beach.

The Cape Pogue Gut is still closed to OSV's due to the presence of unfledged plover and tern chicks. We also caution drivers to use care when driving from Wasque onto the eastern end of Norton Point from the Chappy side. Extreme high tides are causing some overwashing in the area. Don't park on the narrow travel corridor--you may find your vehicle surrounded by water at high tide!

Thanks for your support and understanding during the recent shorebird closures!

FIRST ANNUAL "THE JABBERWOCKY"
FISHING TOURNAMENT
When:  Friday, June 26, 2015
Where: Hyannis Anglers Club, 235 Ocean Street, Hyannis, MA 02601
Why:     To Raise Funds for Camp Jabberwocky
Hosted By Charlie and Karen Gadbois, parents of a camper at Jabberwocky

About Camp Jabberwocky

Camp Jabberwocky is the oldest sleep away camp for people with disabilities in America. It was founded in the summer of 1953 by Helen "Hellcat" Lamb and her first volunteer Ursula. They brought a group of five children with Cerebral Palsy to their campground cottage in Oak Bluffs. The campers paid $15 a week if they could afford it and nothing if they couldn't and everyone had the time of their lives!

For the last 63 years, Camp Jabberwocky has been going strong with Hellcat's mission to provide campers with a week of adventure, friendship, and a break from the routine of their day-to-day.

It costs about $1450 a week for each camper to attend Camp Jabberwocky. Campers pay what they can afford, and no one is ever turned away because of their inability to pay.

The camp is completely run by volunteers. The session Directors, counselors, program staff and doctors are all volunteers...every single one of them! Our volunteers keep coming back year to year because of the connection they make with our campers, last season only 14 out of 150 volunteers were new to Camp Jabberwocky.

Camp Jabberwocky is one of the few places where age doesnt matter for people with disabilities and their families. Our campers have been coming since they were kids and the camp has no age limit. One of the original five campers still attends camp today. It was his 62nd summer last year. More info about Camp Jabberwocky HERE

A message from Our Hosts

"Our daughter Marie has been a camper at Camp Jabberwocky for the last several years and has loved every minute she has spent there! We hope you will consider getting involved and donating to The Jabberwocky. There is nothing better than being on the water on a Cape Cod summer day while helping to raise money for such a worthy cause!"

The Trustees of Reservations

The Trustees of Reservations has closed access for non-essential vehicles to Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge. As of earlier today, our ecology staff discovered 4 unfledged Piping plover chicks had crossed over the barrier beach north of the Dike Bridge to feed along the shoreline of Cape Poge Bay. Under state and federal law we have no discretion in this kind of situation and must close vehicle access to protect these state and federally listed shorebirds. These chicks are approximately 1 week old and may continue to cross and re-cross the barrier beach or may opt to feed along the outer beach. In that case we may be able to re-open vehicle access for non-essential vehicles north of the Dike Bridge. However, we expect other nests to begin hatching in that same area. We will update this site as soon as we have further updates.

Our mission is to protect and preserve properties of exceptional scenic, historic and ecological value. These natural wildlife resources are part of this landscape and are our responsibility to protect. We count on you and your support to accomplish this mission. Thank you for your help and understanding.

Elsewhere, most of the outside of Leland Beach closed to vehicles and dogs to protect unfledged plover chicks on the outside beach opposite the Dike Bridge and unfledged chicks at the Leland crossover 1/2 mile south of the Dike Bridge.  Vehicles are still able to cross the Dike Bridge and access Wasque Point and Norton Point Beach via the inside trails on Leland.

I will keep you up to date as this situation changes.  Hopefully most of these chicks are able to make it to fledging which generally takes 28-30 days.

Today, 6/3/2015, Environmental Police Officers were on patrol in Buzzards Bay near the entrance of the Cape Cod Canal. Officers came upon a vessel with two persons aboard, upon further inquiry it was determined that only one person aboard possessed a valid salt water fishing license. Officers also observed what appeared to be a large quantity of Black Sea Bass and suspected that the fisherman poss...essed over the legal limit of 8 Black Sea Bass. A subsequent check of the fish showed the fisherman possessed 214 Black Sea Bass over the legal limit, with 79 of those being undersized.

The fish and gear were seized and the two persons aboard will be summonsed to criminal court. The fish was donated to the Salvation Army in New Bedford.

We are coming up on the beginning of June and the plover and tern nesting situation at Norton Point and Chappy is coming into focus.  After this weekend, we are predicting several limited outer beach closures over the next week:

1.  At the Cape Poge Gut there is one nest of plovers hatching on Monday, June 1 followed by another plover nest hatching at the Gut on Thursday, June 4.  The tip of the Gut will be closed to vehicle access as of June 1.  Beginning in mid-June, we will staff the Gut 7 days/week with a ranger to prevent boat landing in the closed plover chick area.  This is a change from previous years.   We are finding that the burden of staying out of these areas with vehicles was not being reciprocated by boaters who land in amongst the chicks with dogs, volleyball nets and Frisbees.  While it may still occasionally happen, the job of the enforcement ranger at the Gut will be to direct boat traffic away from the plover chick areas.  We will work with the Edgartown Police Marine Patrol and the Sheriff's Department Marine Unit to assist with this enforcement.

2.  Directly opposite the Dike Bridge, we are anticipating the hatching of a two-egg plover nest on Wednesday, June 3.  As a precautionary measure, I am ordering the temporary closure of the outside beach, opposite the Dike Bridge to ensure that the new-born chicks are able to leave the dunes and feed on the outside beach.  It is my hope that the chicks will move far enough down Leland Beach to allow us to re-open the outside beach directly opposite the Dike Bridge.  The eventual movement and survival of these chicks will dictate what we can open.

3.  At the Narrows on East Beach we have three plover nests which will begin hatching on June 4th and 5th.  We are hoping these chicks stay on the outside beach but if you recall, these chicks crossed over the barrier beach last summer to feed on the bay.  That actions forced the closure of all of Cape Poge for two weeks until they successfully fledged.  TTOR shorebird staff and rangers will be CLOSELY monitoring these chicks to determine their location over the next several weeks.  Also at the mid-way crossover on Leland we have two plover nests which will hatch on Sunday, June 7.  Expect further outside beach closures on the outside beach of Leland at the end of next week.  Again, the movement and survival of these chicks will dictate how much beach area we will be able to maintain at  Leland.  Vehicle drivers are also reminded that dogs are prohibited on the outside beach at Leland as they have been for the past several years.  Dogs in vehicles are allowed on the inside trails on Leland Beach for vehicles transiting the Leland property to gain access to Wasque and Norton Point.

4.  Most surprising of all is the lack of successful plover nests at Wasque and Norton Point.  At present there are no nesting plovers on either property.  As well, Common, Least and Roseate terns are looking at Norton Point Beach for potential nests but none have nested so far.  We expect that to change within the next week or two.  American Oystercatcher chicks can be expected to appear at Norton Point over the next few weeks.  While these chicks are not afforded the same level of protection as terns and plovers, we ask all drivers to be on the lookout for Oystercatcher chicks which can wander into OSV trails.  Slow and steady is the best way to access the outer beaches on Martha's Vineyard.

After much discussion, The Trustees of Reservations will not change its policies and regulations regarding dogs at Norton Point or Chappy.  Thus, dogs are allowed but they must be on leashes.  Rangers are being directed to actively enforce the dog leash laws and may ask offenders to leave the property immediately and may in certain situations void the OSV permits of offenders.  In such cases permits will not be reissued to the vehicle owner for 12 months.

I will be sending weekly reports on beach access issues to you with the hope that you will pass along this information to family and friends as you see fit.

Any questions at all, please let me know.

All the best,
Chris Kennedy

Chick fledgings causing Trustees to close portions of East Beach

The Trustees
June 3, 2015

East Beach has been closed to vehicle traffic as of today to approximately 1-200 yards south of Arruda's. In addition, the restriction at the gut has been extended to 150 yards before the windmill house. This is in addition to yesterday's restriction of Leland Beach from Dike Bridge south 3-400 yards. Distances are approximate and can change daily. Pedestrians are allowed to walk past vehicle clos...ures. No dogs are allowed past these points, even on leash. Again, thank you for your patience and understanding. These closures are happening quickly, however, with luck, good weather, lots of insects, and as little disturbance as possible, these chicks can fledge and beaches will be reopened somewhere in the range of four weeks. However, keep in mind nature is unpredictable and we will do our best to manage access appropriately for both people and wildlife!

Press release

DATES SET FOR 8TH ANNUAL ISLAND CUP FISHING CONTEST

Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters’ Association announces June 19, 20 and 21st as the upcoming 8th Island Cup contest on Nantucket, hosted by the defending champion Nantucket Angler’s Club.

According to MV Team Captain Victor Colantonio, “The contest combines a surf-fishing competition with a neighborly home-hosted stay.  The result is a big dose of fun while fish are biting and a bigger dose of friendship when they’re not.  The Island Cup is another way to stir up membership in our organization by offering a new venue, new friendships and the great experience of team fishing.”

Colantonio said, “It’s America’s only Team Surfcasting Competition open to men and women.  This year, our MV team has a critical shortage of women - so please gals, dust off the waders and come to Nantucket to fish with Nantucket’s‘Happy Hookers’’!

The excursion begins on Friday, June 19 on HyLine departing Oak Bluffsat1:25pm.  Lines In” will be called 5:00pm Friday and “Lines Out” noon Sunday.   Following a parade through the streets of Nantucket, the Cup will be awarded in the Anglers’ Club ballroom 2:00pmSunday.  We’re back to the Vineyard by return ferry Sunday, June 21at4:00pm ($72 round trip) with the Cup in hand.

The contest is catch-and-release using only artificial bait (lures&flies).  As for scoring, each angler’s heaviest bluefish and heaviest bass (28" min.) landed and weight-verified by an opposing angler counts toward the team total, heaviest total wins the Cup.

Anglers budget $200 for the weekend that includes the HyLine, a $20 Fish Kitty and$100for 5 meals.  Each angler is responsible for the cost of personal items.  Lodging, transportation and local knowledge guiding to the best Nantucket fishing spots are provided by the host team.  MV anglers who want to participate n 2015 should contact the MV Surfcasters Website at http://www.mvsurfcasters.org/Contact or email the MV Team Captain a tvictorcolantonio@rocketmail.com
