Biologists attribute the drop to weather conditions
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that the 2012 striped bass juvenile index – a measure of striped bass spawning success in Chesapeake Bay – is below the long-term average this year.
“While we expect large variation in striped bass reproduction from year to year and do not view this low value as an imminent problem, we will be carefully monitoring the results of future surveys,” said DNR Fisheries Director Tom O’Connell. “Three consecutive years of poor reproduction would be necessary to trigger mandatory conservation measures.”
This year’s striped bass juvenile index came in at 0.9, the lowest on record. Last year’s survey showed the fourth highest result in the 59-year history of the survey. The long-term average is 12.

The following was reported by Dave Nash:
State of Massachusetts Office of Fishing and Boating Access has announced that they will commence construction of the Oak Bluffs fishing pier in 2013. They will be going out to bid for construction services by the end of December and the bid award will call for completion by June 30, 2013. We will have a kids’ fishing pier for next summer!
There is also a great article in the MV Times by Nelson Sigelman, called "Pierfect" (October 3, 2012). You can link to that articel here and it is about half way down the web page.

Thanks to all the MVSA members and anyone else that supported this project .
Special thanks need to be given to Dave Nash who was a leader in getting this project back in the mainstream. Without his determination and relentless perserverance this may not have happened. Great job Dave!!!!

Top three places to catch that key fish!
- In the mouth
- In the ocean
- On the end of a hook
Did you really think we were going to give away all the secret places? Now go out and fish, be safe and enjoy everything the island and the derby have to offer.

Wasque point is still undergoing serious erosion. If you haven't been out there recently or since last year's MV Derby you really need to get informed and see this are during the day. Check out these recent photos, at the link below, taken by Ron Domurat (Thanks Ron)
Wasque photos as of August 29, 2012
There is serious erosion from Wasque point all the way West to the breach. There are huge piles of debris, swan pond is gone, Wasque beach West to the breach is gone and the cliffs from Wasque lookout are a 20-30 foot drop directly into the Atlantic! Everyone loves to fish these areas but we are asking our members and all fishermen to please be careful out there. You need to see these areas during the day to really understand how dangerous these areas can be to fish. Please also inform any other fishermen or visiting derby participants of the dangerous conditions.
The breach area on the Chappy side and Norton side are just as dangerous. There is a serious drop off from shore with very swift moving currents and deep water. You can find yourself standing in ankle deep water and then your next step is into 10 feet of swift moving water!
We want every fishermen to enjoy the derby and the island but please be careful and educate yourself about these areas. No fish is worth somebody being injured or losing their life over.
Enjoy the 67th Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby but please be careful out there.

Warming water temperatures might be causing an increase in the number of striped bass that have lesions from a viral or bacterial infection, according to the state Division of Marine Fisheries.
While the number of infected fish is estimated at less than 5 percent of those landed along the entire Massachusetts coastline, the infection rate is higher in fish caught in the Cape Cod Canal and in Buzzards Bay, according to a state advisory issued last month.

The MVSA held their annual picnic at the Bend in the Road beach. Everyone enjoyed a nice evening on the beach just catching up on things, sharing a few laughs and of course telling fish stories. Don't believe a word of it!
