Wasque point is still undergoing serious erosion. If you haven't been out there recently or since last year's MV Derby you really need to get informed and see this are during the day. Check out these recent photos, at the link below, taken by Ron Domurat (Thanks Ron)
Wasque photos as of August 29, 2012
There is serious erosion from Wasque point all the way West to the breach. There are huge piles of debris, swan pond is gone, Wasque beach West to the breach is gone and the cliffs from Wasque lookout are a 20-30 foot drop directly into the Atlantic! Everyone loves to fish these areas but we are asking our members and all fishermen to please be careful out there. You need to see these areas during the day to really understand how dangerous these areas can be to fish. Please also inform any other fishermen or visiting derby participants of the dangerous conditions.
The breach area on the Chappy side and Norton side are just as dangerous. There is a serious drop off from shore with very swift moving currents and deep water. You can find yourself standing in ankle deep water and then your next step is into 10 feet of swift moving water!
We want every fishermen to enjoy the derby and the island but please be careful and educate yourself about these areas. No fish is worth somebody being injured or losing their life over.
Enjoy the 67th Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby but please be careful out there.

Warming water temperatures might be causing an increase in the number of striped bass that have lesions from a viral or bacterial infection, according to the state Division of Marine Fisheries.
While the number of infected fish is estimated at less than 5 percent of those landed along the entire Massachusetts coastline, the infection rate is higher in fish caught in the Cape Cod Canal and in Buzzards Bay, according to a state advisory issued last month.

The MVSA held their annual picnic at the Bend in the Road beach. Everyone enjoyed a nice evening on the beach just catching up on things, sharing a few laughs and of course telling fish stories. Don't believe a word of it!

Cape Cod Times article "Chappaquiddick's Wasque washed away" written by Doug Fraser, June 17, 2012.
CHAPPAQUIDDICK — To Chris Kennedy, the superintendent of The Trustees of Reservations on Martha's Vineyard, the erosion at Wasque was Nature writ large, like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Large trees and brush sliding over the edge of a bluff into the water below, trailing root systems and the thin cap of sod, was high drama, like viewing a lava flow in slow motion.
Still, others couldn't bear to watch as the pace of erosion quickened on the southeast corner of the island and the Atlantic gobbled up hundreds of feet of beach and ate into a forest in less than two years.

Check out the Martha's Vineyard Times article where Hawkeye was presented with a cell phone from the MV Derby Committee for saving a driver from the water. This was a great recognition of Hawkeye and his quick thinking. Great going Hawkeye!
